Oversized Wooden Candy Hearts

The season of love is fast approaching – the endcaps in the stores are starting to turn shades of reds and pinks while the smell of chocolate and roses linger in the air. One of my favorite movements recently around Valentine’s Day is not only a romantic love focus but a focus on love of all types. Everyone in your life from friends, family, and your partner are all part of who you can express love to this February. One of the classic treats around Valentines that can help with those different love expressions are the Brachs Candy Hearts. If you want to see another candy heart project with a little history on the sweethearts included – check out this sweethearts wreath post.

Catchy phrases ranging from “KISS ME” to “TTYL” all inspire decorations (and treats) this Valentines. But wait… while looking at the Brach’s website to pick what the hearts will say, I found that they have a “wisecracks” product. They are a sassier version of candy hearts with phrases like “FRND ZONE”, “Salty”, and “SHH”. YES PLEASE! I am already brainstorming a fun way to incorporate the sayings into a decoration or the candy itself into a treat. If you have a preference on a wisecracking candy heart decoration or treat, comment below!

Loads of Love Valentines Sign

After taking down large amount of Christmas decorations in January, our plan was to put up Valentines to fill some of the empty space. The sad realization that we only have two decorations for the holiday quickly sat in. For a while now I’ve been wanting to use a pickup truck in a decoration. With this lack of Valentines décor in our house, I decided the two would make a perfect pairing. This loads of love sign was the result and it turned out exactly like I pictured!

I did make this with my Cricut machine. Let me know if you are interested in this being put as a digital download for purchase on Etsy! Make sure to follow me here on WordPress but also on Instagram and now YouTube with our same name, Take2Create.

I was torn about whether to do red hearts and lettering or the black glitter hearts and lettering. Read more to see how they looked side by side in my design space before I decided!

HOME sign – Valentine’s Snoopy

I started a little tradition the first February my boyfriend and I were together where I cut out 14 red paper hearts and every day I would give him a heart with a reason why I love him written on it. For the last few years, we haven’t lived together so it would be a texted photo of the heart in the morning. This year we live together and it has made every day’s unveiling even more special! I have been taping them to the mirror in the bathroom every night so he wakes up and sees the new one first thing. I consider them my annual Love Notes to him. Do you have any traditions for your significant other to show or tell how much you love them?

If you’ve been following the blog for a bit, you’ll remember I had made a wooden HOME sign with the “O” being removable. This allows me to add a seasonal shape to our front entryway for holidays without always creating a whole new sign! I knew I wanted a cartoon character as my base so when I found this picture of cute Snoopy holding a heart, it was meant to be. Overall the hardest thing about doing a character like this is that everyone knows what Snoopy looks like. Getting details right are so important for a well-known character. To make it even harder; after my initial sketch out for the outline and details, the first white paint layer lost all my sketched details and I was now hand painting Snoopy’s eyes, mouth, ears, and toes!

Paper Valentine Centerpiece

Is there anything better than sitting down with a hot cup of coffee (or tea) and relaxing? Most of our crafts are brainstormed during one of these peaceful moments. We came up with this centerpiece concept late on a weekend night. We knew we wanted an inexpensive Valentines craft that wouldn’t take too much time to complete. Also, best purchase during the Valentine season? – A Heart Paper Punch. Valentines Centerpiece Continue reading “Paper Valentine Centerpiece”

Sweethearts Wreath

Walking down the aisles of a store from January to mid-February is a bombardment of Valentines gifts, colors, and candies. Tucked away in the aisle is also a piece of nostalgia… Sweethearts. The chalky hard candies with phrases from “Call Me” to “Be Mine” (or the newer additions like “Text Me”) bring back sweet childhood memories.

The candies have evolved quite a bit from the original form. The Smithsonian describes that the candy maker Necco created a version of the current treat when the company started in 1847. It started out as a scalloped shell with a paper fortune in the middle. The red writing was added 14 years later in 1861 by the founder’s brother who invented a machine that could press red vegetable dye into the candy. The shape went through many different forms before settling into its heart shaped delight in the early 1900’s. Even though they have made adjustments to the phrases and flavors, Sweethearts still hold a sentimental place in my Valentines memories.sweethearts_wreath Continue reading “Sweethearts Wreath”
